I feel a growing frustration with what is going on in Russia and, as we are starting to seriously discuss forming a movement, i am trying to define my place in the story of Russia's modern existence. There is a lot to be considered. The situation with Andrey, after our split, is no longer an obstacle. We shared a lot, trial, jail, fight against some very powerful enemies, but at the end it boils down to felling between a man and a woman. If it turns out that that certain something is missing friendship emerges as the only option. I hope to be able to make the right decision.

Hope or Nope

В день инагурации Барака Обамы в январе 2009 года я находилась в Москве и вместе c другими русскими и американцами, собравшимися ради этого события в 6 утра в Starlight diner на Маяковке, радовалась до слез этому историческому, можно сказать эпохальному, событию. Мы обнимали друг друга, пели и были переполнены надеждами на большие долгожданные перемены, как в Америке, так и во всем мире.
Прошло почти два года. Вчера, идя по Манхэттэну, я увидела заголовок на первой странице New York Post. Надпись "Nope"(разговорная форма "НЕТ") вместо известного слогана предвыборной кампании Президента "Hope" (надежда). И там же: "Избиратели откажутся от Обамы". Я, как человек, поддерживающий президента Обаму и помогающий по возможности демократической партии, испытала чувство острой горечи.
Действительно, последние два года были очень трудные: тяжелейший экономический кризис , повлекший за собой массовые увольнения, потеря жилья, депрессивные настроения в обществе. Не так давно я услышала, как на автобусной остановке разговаривали два человека: "я встаю в 6 утра но у меня хотя бы есть работа. У других ее нет совсем."
Я подумала, что именно эти настроения и лишат демократов лидерства в Конгрессе.
Выборы 2 ноября решали судьбу всех 435 мест в Палате представителей и 37 мест в Сенате.
Уже к вечеру активность избирателей превысила показатели 2006 года ( такие выборы проводятся раз в 4 года), что обычно характерно для наиболее кризисных периодов в жизни страны. Во многих домах, как и в моем, телевизоры не отключались до поздней ночи. Промежуточные выборы в Конгресс - это своего рода вливание свежей крови в политический организм страны. А также, в некоторой степени, референдум граждан по оценке
работы действующего Президента.
Выбирая сегодня между демократами и республиканцами, американцы в реальности голосуют "за" или "против" политики Обамы. Недовольсто людей, громко звучашее повсюду, больше всего затрагивало непопулярную медицинскую реформу и недостаточно эффективные антикризисные меры. Мне часто приходилось спорить с друзьями- республиканцами, доказывая им, что от Президента и его Администрации ожидают слишком многого в сложившейся ситуации, что большую часть из того, что Президент обещал в свою предвыборую кампанию, он выполнил: и
по военным действиям в Ираке и Афганистане и по медицинской проблеме. Как демократы нервничали перед выборами, тому я лично свидетель. Меня буквально забрасывали просьбами оказывать ту или иную поддержку. По моему мнению, демократы проиграли Палату представителей из-за того, что яма, в которой страна оказалась, слишком глубока, чтобы из нее выбраться за такое короткое время. Ее слишком долго рыли. Поэтому наш ослик ( символ демократической партии) пока ее не перепрыгнул. К моей личной радости демократы все-таки
сохранили Сенат.

Anna Politkovskaya remembered, 7 October, 2010

Back from Moscow, still jet-legged and in the process of preparing the 31st event. Two stressful weeks in my home town (....my God, it is my home town...i never think of it that way.) From Khodorkovsky court hearing to animal shelter and high security prison, i covered a lot of ground.

Some of the fact as I translate 'Putin-10 years-The Results'.

The sum of the black market or corruption cash is $300 billion, according to Transparency International.

The number of terrorist acts on the territory of the Russian Federation, including the North Caucasus had increased from 135 in 2000 to 786 in 2010. In Dagestan alone every day takes lives of 4-5 military personnel. The problem with terrorism in Russia and the North Caucasus is nothing short of a global threat.

Moscow, day 7

Getting around on the Moscow metro, after being away for over a year, makes you realize yet again how different people are here. The heaviness of depression or anger in so many faces. No smiles, even on the younger faces. People seem down and life-beaten. Smell of alcohol from people at the most random times and places. It is interesting that the very center of Moscow on a work day at 1pm is not crowded, at all. Where are all the people, I wanted to say? Also, in a cafe across from Kremlin, where a cup of coffee is $7 they don't take any cards, no plastic at all.....In fact not too many places do take cards.
Insufficient salaries, low pensions and prices same or higher than those in NYC, people are finding it hard to make ends meet.
Going home in the evening on a 'stranger', as my English friends call the random car you flag down on the street and that takes you where you need to go, i asked my driver a question. 'Do you and many of your friends feel they live exactly how they deserve to live?' After a long pause he said 'No, but what can i do?' The same, very same 'what can i do' response. The response that will eventually destroy this country.

Anna POLITKOVSKAYA, Four Years ON

At the demonstration in memory of Anna Politkovskaya there were around 500 people: journalists, representatives of the human rights organizations, actors, opposition leaders, victims of Nord Ost etc. (And about 7 buses of the policemen) Many of the same faces and people I know well and am close to. Speeches were short and heart-felt, poems were read, even extracts from Hamlet. The very moving part was the recorded speech by Anna's mother. She was coming back from seeing her at the hospital when she was shot and killed at 16.03 four years ago. Very much wish we saw more journalists present and more young people there...

31 of October Event!

Strategy 31 is now a symbol of protest against the corrupt, bloody and dangerous regime of Putin's Russia.
People, citizens of Russia, must be allowed to peacefully assemble, without fear of being arrested or beaten. They must be free to protest against mafia-like 'Vertical power', driven by ego and money, corruption of the state officials, lack of free and independent media and judicial system, the assassinations of journalists and lawyers, imprisonment of political opponents, and NO respect for the LAW and HUMAN LIFE....

I will be going to the manifestation in memory of Anna Politkovskaya. The sad thing is, as one polish journalist told me, Anna is known in Poland but very few know her in Russia. Those she fought for and died for don't know her, while those in Poland, do....

I am back in Moscow....By the metro station there are a few people, members of the democratic movement Solidarnost, who are distributing the mini book Putin: Ten year results by one of the opposition leaders Boric Nemzov. i asked the guy i got my book from about how well the book is doing. He said that over the past 2 hours they gave out over six hundred copies. While we were talking 4 people came and got their copy. This is good, i told him. He went on to share with me his concern over the certain amount of friction in the opposition.

Another 9/11 anniversary here, as always, full of grace and dignity.
There was a very moving moment when, during the reading of the names of all who died in the twin towers, a girl of about 7 took the stage and after reading names of other spoke of her uncle, who died there. She said: "We are from Poland. My uncle was 21. I didn't know him but my mom says he was the best brother. We will always remember him. God Bless America."
I echo, God Bless America.

At least 15 killed and over 80 wounded. It will not stop and will not end, because the government does not care and does not want to deal with it. 'Terrorism is over' we were told by General "..", we don't need your agents. 'We want to spy on US instead..'
Our naive attempt to get a letter to the President, got us nowhere.
This in the country that suffers from terrorism almost to the same level as Pakistan.

or rather a beggining of a comment about yet another assasination, this time of a bank CEO, in Moscow: "Я пенсионерка, мне плохо и голодно в нашей стране"- 'I am retired and my life in this country is horrible and that of near-starvation..' Nadezhda went on to say that nevertheless she is against murder.
